If you cannot detect the
disease, how can you treat it?
Dentists often experience anxiety when attempting to diagnose the phenomenon
known as hidden caries. A suspicious-looking tooth presents a treatment dilemma
for dentists. Should the tooth be opened up? What if no caries is found? Should
the tooth just be watched, or does that give caries more time to destroy the
tooth's surface?
A changing caries model: due to floridation, caries has gone "underground".
While helping to improve the oral health of many Americans, fluoridation has
resulted in harder tooth enamel. Incipient caries lesions that once began on the
tooth's surface have no migrated below the surface.
Proven clinical results: Treatment decisions require a higher degree of
certainty. The DIAGNOdent laser caries detection aid removes the doubt from
treatment decisions regarding hidden caries ore questionable stained grooves.
The device's ability to see into occlusal pits and fissures enables dentists to
treat sub-surface caries lesions with confidence.
Great News!!
No more guessing when it comes to your child’s oral health!
The latest technology in caries detection is now available at Kids Dental Care!
It is our goal to help you maintain and improve your child’s oral health. To
achieve this goal, the dental care that your child receives at Kids Dental Care
now includes state of the art equipment.
During a routine dental exam, dentists traditionally use an instrument called
the ‘explorer’ to detect decay (cavities). Different examiners could easily
differ on detecting small cavities due to several factors, such as the sharpness
of the dental explorer and the tactical feel of the dentist. It is easy to miss
a small incipient cavity on a tooth surface if that surface is not explored
thoroughly or if it is in a hidden location under the hard surface of the tooth.
Furthermore, there is always a concern of transferring microscopic tooth decay
particles packed with decay-forming bacteria from a decayed tooth to a healthy
one while using the traditional dental explorer. As a result, many small
cavities go undetected only to progress into advanced cavities which require
considerable tooth structure reduction to treat. All the above drawbacks can be
eliminated with the latest technology in caries detection which is now employed
at Kids Dental Care. This technology uses a small laser instrument called the
DIAGNOdent, which scans your child’s teeth with harmless laser light searching
for hidden decay.
We can’t cure what we can’t see!
Locating hidden decay before it destroys tooth structure (from the inside out)
is a major goal for modern dentistry. The widespread use of fluoride supplements
in dental materials, toothpastes and drinking water has made tooth surfaces
harder and more resistant to decay. However, diagnosing cavities beneath the
hard surface is more challenging because the disease process can start through
microscopic defects in the hard surface enamel and can readily spread into the
softer tooth structure beneath the surface.
X-rays and probing with an explorer are limited to detecting sub surface decay,
particularly when the cavity is in its early stages. Fortunately, the new
DIAGNOdent is a major breakthrough that allows the dentist to monitor the areas
below the hard surfaces. The DIAGNOdent allows the dentist and the hygienist to
locate hidden decay, and with treatment stop the spread of disease before it
destroys the tooth from within.
Kid friendly
The unique instrument provides instant feedback on the health of your child’s
tooth. A pen like probe simply glides over tooth surfaces constantly checking
the health of the tooth. A number scale and an alarm signals the operator when
there are signs of hidden decay. This technology is completely safe and pain
free. |
