What Is Total Child Care
Total Child Care is a unique approach
to children’s dentistry that is advocated by Dr. Ammar Idlibi at Kids Dental
Care in Bristol, CT after years of education, training and experience.
A child’s mouth is a gateway to the
whole body and gives an experienced specialist much information regarding the
child’s well being.
Many systemic conditions can be
manifested in the mouth (the oral cavity). For example, there are blood
disorders or certain syndromes that can adversely affect both primary (baby) and
permanent (adult) teeth and their supporting tissues. Such conditions may or may
not have been detected, and it becomes incumbent upon the Pediatric Dentist to
recognize their oral manifestations, come up with a differential diagnosis and
refer the child to the proper specialist. In the past 14 years of practicing as
a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Ammar referred many of his children
patients to different kinds specialists including; an oral pathologist, an oral
surgeon, a nutritionist, an allergist, an ENT specialist, a pediatrician and
even a child psychologist.
The highest quality of dental care
under the sun: how do we do it?
Although Dr. Ammar as a Pediatric Dentist is
trained to treat almost all dental needs of children and adolescents up to the
age of 21. However, there are certain cases that may require intervention by
other dental specialists in order to provide your child with the highest
specialized dental care. The bottom line is if we know of another specialist who
can do a better job in treating a certain delicate or sophisticated dental need
for your child, we will send you there! Besides referring to medical
specialists, Dr. Ammar had referred many of his children patients in the past
years to other dental specialists such as an Endodontist, a Prosthodontist, an
Orthodontist, an oral surgeon, even a TMJ specialist. We do the research for you
and we will guide you to where your child will be best taken care of under the
sun.
Orthodontic Treatment (braces)
A well trained Pediatric Dental specialist is a dentist who received
clinical training (in a residency or specialty post-graduate program) in all the
aspects of children’s dental needs. This includes additional training in the
field of Orthodontics for children (braces). Dr. Ammar had the privilege of
receiving his post-graduate specialty training from Tufts University School of
Dental Medicine, which has a strong Orthodontic component in its curriculum.
Additionally, Dr. Ammar attended numerous continuing education courses in the
field of Orthodontics and has an extensive experience in providing orthodontic
treatment to children of all ages for over a decade. Dr. Ammar is highly trained
and experienced in early treatment of malocclusion (early braces) functional
appliances (growth and muscular modification) and bio-progressive therapy. Some
complex Orthodontic cases (such as surgical orthognathic cases) are better
treated by a qualified orthodontist and when we spot such case, we will make
sure that you are referred to the best orthodontist we know of. Again, we do the
research for you, and if we know of an orthodontist who can do a better job, we
will send you there!
How can I tell if my child is receiving high quality care?
It is usually difficult for an average dental patient (or a parent) to evaluate
the quality of dental treatment, especially if poor dental treatment did not
result in any immediate symptoms or discomfort. In many cases, poor quality in
dental treatment can go unnoticed by the dental patient for years until symptoms
arise, by then, it maybe too late to repair the damage. The best judge to
evaluate the quality of dental care is another qualified dental professional.
This is why Dr. Ammar may encourage a second opinion in certain cases. We are so
confident of what we are offering your child, that we will take an extra time to
educate you of what quality treatment means and how to recognize it. We will be
happy to answer any questions you might have.
What does it mean to be Board
Certified?
The Mission of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is to verify to the
public and to the health professions that a pediatric dentist has successfully
completed both an advanced educational program accredited by the American Dental
Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and a voluntary examination
process designed to validate the knowledge, application, and performance
requisite to the delivery of proficient care in pediatric dentistry.
The Board is recognized by the American Dental Association and is required to
report annually to the American Dental Association Council on Dental Education
and to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (Requirements for Recognition
of Dental Specialties and National Certifying Boards for Dental Specialists,
October 1995).
Dr. Ammar was first certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in
September, 1994 and was recertified in October, 2004.
